Building a strong character in The Blood of Dawnwalker is not only about unlocking powerful active abilities. You also need enough ability slots to equip the passive skills that make those abilities significantly stronger.
This is especially important because unlocking a passive in the skill tree does not automatically activate its effect. The passive must also be placed into an available slot on the skill wheel under its corresponding category.
That makes additional Swordmastery, Vampirism, and Witchcraft slots an important part of long-term character progression. Passives such as Swiftness, Walking Fortress, Shred, and Scarlet Shield can then support multiple combat styles instead of being useful for only one specialized build.

Why Ability Slots Are So Important
The skill wheel has limited space, and those slots are used for more than active combat abilities.
Passive skills also need to be equipped before their bonuses become active. Simply spending a skill point and unlocking a passive in the skill tree is not enough.
This means every additional slot gives you more flexibility when building your character. Instead of choosing between an important active ability and a strong passive, additional slots allow you to equip more of both.
Ability Slots And Activation Charges Are Different
It is useful to separate two systems that can sound similar.
Activation charges are the yellow combat resources spent when using active abilities. Depending on the ability, you may need one, two, or even three charges.
Ability slots, on the other hand, determine how many active and passive skills you can place on your skill wheel.
Increasing activation charges lets you use more abilities in combat, while increasing ability slots lets you equip more skills and passives at the same time. Strong builds benefit from improving both systems.
Master Fencer And Swordmastery Slots
Each major skill category has progression that can increase the number of slots available for that category.
For Swordmastery, the video identifies Master Fencer as the relevant passive for expanding your available Swordmastery slots.
Increasing these slots matters even if you use a mixed build because Swordmastery contains several broadly useful passives rather than bonuses that only matter while swinging a sword.
The more Swordmastery slots you have available, the easier it becomes to combine active abilities with general-purpose passives without constantly removing another important skill.
Unlock More Vampirism Slots
Vampirism has its own corresponding passive progression for increasing the number of Vampirism slots available on the skill wheel.
These additional spaces become increasingly useful as you unlock more vampire abilities and passive effects.
Because some Vampirism passives can also improve sword-focused combat, increasing Vampirism slots is useful even when you are not creating a completely pure vampire build.
Forbidden Sigils And Witchcraft Slots
For Witchcraft, the corresponding slot-unlock progression shown in the video is Forbidden Sigils.
It serves the same basic purpose: increasing the space available for Witchcraft skills in that category of the wheel.
The video recommends prioritizing Swordmastery and Vampirism slots for the demonstrated style of play, while Witchcraft can become a larger focus in a different or more specialized playthrough.
Unlocking A Passive Does Not Activate It
One of the easiest mistakes to make is assuming that a passive becomes active as soon as you buy it in the skill tree.
That is not how the system works. After unlocking the passive, you still need to place it on the skill wheel in the appropriate category.
This is the main reason additional ability slots are so valuable. Every strong passive takes space that could otherwise be used by another passive or active ability.
As your character gains more options, limited slot capacity can become a bigger restriction than the number of skills you have already unlocked.
Why Swiftness Is One Of The Best Passives
Swiftness is one of the strongest examples of a passive that can support several different playstyles.
The passive increases your attack speed. When fully upgraded, it also improves critical-hit potential after performing a Perfect Block.
Perfect Blocks are a frequent part of combat, so the passive can maintain strong uptime when you consistently react to enemy attacks.
More importantly, Swiftness is not restricted to swords. The bonus also works with your claws, allowing it to remain useful in both human and vampire-oriented combat.
That makes Swiftness a strong candidate for one of your limited passive slots because it continues providing value even when you switch between different attack styles.
Walking Fortress Restores Activation Charges
Walking Fortress is another passive with broad build value because it connects Perfect Blocks directly to activation charge restoration.
When you successfully perform Perfect Blocks, Walking Fortress restores portions of your activation charge.
Those charges are what allow you to use active abilities, so the passive effectively turns a defensive action into a way to prepare your next offensive ability.
This makes the skill useful for builds that rely heavily on active abilities and need a reliable way to regenerate their combat resource.
Swiftness And Walking Fortress Work Together
Swiftness and Walking Fortress also benefit from the same basic combat behavior: performing Perfect Blocks.
A successful Perfect Block can help activate Swiftness’s offensive bonuses while Walking Fortress contributes activation charge restoration.
Instead of using separate actions to trigger each part of your build, one well-timed defensive reaction can therefore contribute to both damage and ability resource generation.
Shred Works With Swords And Claws At Night
Shred is another strong Vampirism passive because it provides a chance to apply bleed.
Unlike Swiftness and Walking Fortress, Shred is more conditional because the effect described in the video works during nighttime.
However, it is still flexible in terms of weapon choice. The bleed chance can work with both swords and claws, so it is useful for mixed Swordmastery and Vampirism setups rather than a single weapon type.
Bleed also creates opportunities for other skills to benefit from status effects, making Shred particularly useful when your larger build contains abilities that become stronger against bleeding targets.
Scarlet Shield Adds Perfect Block Healing
Scarlet Shield is another powerful passive available through progression involving one of the court vampires.
The effect described in the video provides healing whenever you perform Perfect Blocks.
That creates another reason to build around good defensive timing. With the right passive combination, a Perfect Block can contribute to offensive buffs, activation charge restoration, and survivability at the same time.
Scarlet Shield therefore fits particularly well with a setup that already uses Swiftness and Walking Fortress.
Best Perfect Block Passive Combination
The strongest synergy from this section comes from stacking passives that respond to the same action.
A Perfect Block can potentially contribute to:
- Swiftness: attack-speed support and, at higher progression, critical-hit benefits after Perfect Blocks.
- Walking Fortress: activation charge restoration.
- Scarlet Shield: healing.
This is why additional passive slots are so important. If you cannot equip all of the relevant passives at the same time, you cannot take full advantage of their combined effects.
Which Ability Slots Should You Prioritize?
For the type of mixed combat setup demonstrated in the video, the highest priority is getting as many Swordmastery and Vampirism slots as practical.
Swordmastery provides strong general passives such as Swiftness and Walking Fortress, while Vampirism gives access to options such as Shred and additional vampire abilities.
Witchcraft also has its own slot progression through Forbidden Sigils, but the video treats Witchcraft as a more isolated direction that may make more sense as a larger focus in a different playthrough.
Best Passive Skills To Equip
For a flexible mixed build, the strongest options covered in this part of the guide are:
- Swiftness for attack speed and Perfect Block-related offensive benefits.
- Walking Fortress for activation charge restoration through Perfect Blocks.
- Shred for nighttime bleed chance with swords and claws.
- Scarlet Shield for healing through Perfect Blocks.
The best combination ultimately depends on how many slots you have unlocked, which is why slot progression should not be treated as a secondary upgrade.
Unlocking another ability slot can effectively allow you to run another powerful passive permanently, making it one of the most valuable long-term improvements to a completed build.
